The blood type diet has become known to the public with the publishing of the Eat Right 4 Your type Book, written by Peter D’Adamo. The author developed a diet designed to improve health, but it can be used also for weight loss purposes.
What Is Blood Type Diet?
As suggested by its name, this diet promotes the consumption of certain foods, depending on your blood type. For each type, there is a list of foods that are recommended, as well as a number of foods that are banned.
- Blood Type 0. This is the most widely spread blood type and the recommended diet is high in protein sources such as fish and meat. Carbs and dairy products should be kept to a minimum.
- Blood Type A. Fish and vegetables should be the main foods, while red meat is banned and dairy consumption would be kept low.
- Blood Type B. Meat, dairy, fruit and veggies consumption should be high, while bacon and chicken should be avoided.
- Blood Type AB. Those having this blood type should follow a combination of A and B diets.
How Does Blood Type Diet Work?
There are debates on weather there is scientific substantiation behind the claim that a different diet should be followed, by blood type. One point of those that disagree is that people have different metabolisms even within the same blood type. Thus, they react likely differently to carbs, proteins of fats intake.
The diets has certain recommendations that apply to all blood types, such as taking out refined and processed foods. This leads to a healthier diet overall. A bit more tricky is the banned list foods for each blood type, as it includes fruits, veggies and other foods that are considered healthy.
Dr. D’Adamo provides in his book several low calorie diet plans for those that need to lose weight. There are a lot of people who had positive results with the diet. It is not clear if the weight loss has anything to do with eating according with your blood type foods recommendation, or with following a low calorie diet and avoiding refined foods.
A positive is that exercising is encouraged and there are specific recommendations on exercise type choose, also based on blood type. Regular exercising has a dramatically positive effect on weight loss.
Finally, Dr. Adamo has developed also a line of nutritional supplements that include shakes, pills, bars and skin products. They are also specifically developed for each blood type. While these may certainly help, there is no strong evidence that they are truly necessary. It is up to you to decide if you would like to complement the diet itself with products from this line of supplements.
